My 7-week-old son had severe brain damage, and multiple broken ribs. The Crown Prosecution Service concluded that only the father (my ex-husband) could be responsible for the inflicted injuries. He was the only one with our baby.

The substantive hearing was on June 19, 2024

My ex-husband was present. It was strange to see him again. No emotions, no feelings, he showed absolutely nothing. I exercised my right to speak and told him what I felt and what I want to know: the truth! He looked at me, but nothing happened in his face. Unbelievable.

During the session, my ex-husband came up with a new story

According to him, our little boy had fallen. He had previously said that he fell off the couch, but during the hearing, he stated something different: that he had dropped our child onto the laminate flooring. That was confession number one. I hoped that the second would come as well, but unfortunately, he kept denying it, despite there being so much evidence.

During the session, all the facts came to light about what happened to my little boy

I was mortified at that moment. How could he dare to do such a thing to such a small, defenseless little boy? My boy had both old and new fractures. That shocked me tremendously as well. The violence turned out not to have been a one-time event. For this, I received help in the form of exposure therapy and EMDR. I was burdened with an enormous sense of guilt. Why had I never noticed or seen this before? However, the police told me that I could never have known. Never.

Then came the demand from the Crown Prosecution Service: 9 years

The judge decided otherwise on July 11th, unfortunately. On this day, my birthday, the verdict was: 7 years in prison. I had hoped for a harsher sentence. What he did to my child truly deserves a severe punishment. But nothing could be further from the truth: he only received a 7-year sentence. Due to his age, the judge found this to be sufficient. How angry we were, all of us – my family, my friends, everyone. People yelled at the judge because we disagreed.

Eventually, the Crown Prosecution Service decided to appeal a week later

This punishment was far too lenient. Just a week later, we heard that my ex was also appealing because he thought the sentence was too severe. We have now had one pro-forma hearing in the appeal. The next substantive hearing is scheduled for April 2025. I pray that his sentence will be much harsher. But no punishment will ever be severe enough for what he did to my child – and my other two children, who are now left with traumas for the rest of their lives.

In August 2024, we had a lawsuit concerning sole custody

Thank goodness I won this. I now have sole custody of our other son. That was finally something positive. How happy I was. I want him to never be able to contact me or my children again. And that he gets the maximum punishment.
